About Loch Sunart to Sound of Jura Marine Protected Area

Designated in 2014, the Loch Sunart to Sound of Jura Marine Protected Area (MPA) covers over 161,000 hectares of coastal waters on Scotland's west coast, extending through Loch Sunart, the Sound of Mull, and the Sound of Jura. This MPA was established to protect the area's vital marine habitats, which include flame shell beds, seagrass meadows, horse mussel reefs, and maerl beds—important for their biodiversity and as nursery grounds for many species. The waters here support populations of native fish such as Atlantic salmon, supporting local fisheries and larger marine predators including bottlenose dolphins and grey seals. The rugged coastline with its deep sea lochs and sheltered sounds offers excellent opportunities for boating, kayaking, wildlife watching, and diving, with abundant underwater caves and reef systems for exploration. Historically, the area has a rich marine heritage and is adjacent to several remote coastal villages that maintain traditional Scotland maritime culture. Visitors are drawn by the tranquility of the area, pristine waters, and the chance to experience rare marine life in a relatively undisturbed environment. Conservation efforts focus on sustainable use and improving water quality to safeguard this natural marine landscape for future generations.
